Enjoy The Outdoors Through Orienteering

What is Orienteering?

Think of it as "The Adventure Sport of Navigation."
Orienteering is a fun, fast-paced outdoor challenge where students use a specially designed map to find a series of checkpoints (called "controls") across a school campus or park.

It is:

  • Confidence Building: It teaches students to make quick decisions and trust their own judgment.

  • Inclusive: It’s not just about who is the fastest runner; it’s about who can think clearly under pressure.

  • Safe Exploration: The Auckland Schools Series takes place in a controlled environment, making it a safe way for kids to gain independence and enjoy the outdoors.

How it Works:

  • The Goal: Students must visit all the checkpoints in the correct order in the shortest time possible.

  • The Strategy: There is no set path! Each student decides their own route—should they take the shortcut through the trees or the fast way around the path?

  • The Skills: It combines cross-country running with problem-solving. It’s often called “running while playing chess.”

What To Bring?

Active clothes, running shoes (they might get muddy in the forest!), water & some food for after the race. If you have your own compass or SPORTident chip then bring it along as well! If you want to buy some orienteering specific equipment then check out TrailBlaze.
